Urgent detention and first-appearance work requires a different timetable from a document-heavy company investigation, trial preparation or an international request.

The first review should identify who is being represented, which authority is acting, what document has been served, whether a deadline or court time is fixed and what evidence is already recorded. This gives the lawyer enough context to assess urgency and availability without asking the client to send an entire case file through an unsecured first message.

What to confirm before an engagement
