A criminal case can begin with an arrest, a request to attend questioning, a search, a summons, a financial investigation or a complaint made by an affected person or company. The lawyer’s role must be matched to the client’s actual status and the decision that is due next. Urgent detention and first-appearance work requires a different timetable from a document-heavy company investigation, trial preparation or an international request.

The first review should identify who is being represented, which authority is acting, what document has been served, whether a deadline or court time is fixed and what evidence is already recorded. This gives the lawyer enough context to assess urgency and availability without asking the client to send an entire case file through an unsecured first message.

What to confirm before an engagement

Before representation begins, the responsible lawyer, scope of work, fees, communication route and responsibility for immediate deadlines should be confirmed. An interpreter, forensic specialist, accountant, technical expert or foreign lawyer may also be needed, but those roles do not replace Georgian defence counsel for local procedural work.

Company and individual interests require an early conflict check

In a business investigation, a company, director, employee, shareholder and affected third party may not have the same interests.
